Mel's Diner - Serving Up The Good Stuff

"Beauty by the roadside."

I am always amazed at what I see on the side of the road.  Fortunately Texas has done a great job of keeping our highways clear of clutter.

They may be cleaner than ever before but that is not the only thing I like about them.

They also maintain natural beauty in the busiest parts of the cities.

I am mighty proud of my state and pictures like this (I took myself) make me proud to be a Texan.  These were shot on 161 and 183 in Irving.

Mel...

Lady Bird Johnson was instrumentalin the highway beautification program of America, and it was all due to her love of the wildflowers of Texas. Thanks for sharing that special beauty with us here at AR!

Melody,

Beautiful! I noticed we haven't had as many flowers this year. My grandmother's favorite flower was the bluebonnet. I have to admit it is mine too but I do love all of them. When I went to Austin a couple of weeks ago there were hardly any blooming either. Your shots are beautiful!

Richard- I remember that from somewhere...  For many years there have been commercials running that say, "Don't mess with Texas."  Between that and Lady Bird Johnson we are listening!  We also have 'adpot a highway' programs.

Becky- I took them to enter a contest.  I didn't realize how much fun I was going to have chasing flowers!

Thanks for the contest!

I really do love the wildflowers in Texas.  I know a bluebonnet is nothing more than a weed, but it is the prettiest darn weed I've ever seen.

Becky- We have had an oddly cool year thus far.  I think it is why we don't have as many flowers to enjoy.

Patrick- I get irritated when I see weeds in my backyard.  However, I do not think I would pull a bluebonnet.

Mel...

Irving, the home of the Dallas Cowboys? Never thought of it as a wildflower hotbed before.

Driving over to Austin today, hoping to see of the bluebonnets as we get closer.  We can't grow them in Houston.

I have always loved the bluebonnets.  As a kid growing up in San Antonio I would (shhhhhhh) pick them when out walking around.  Glad to see your photos.

Those are really cool photos.  Did you take them on the fly?  Looks like you were moving or the wind was blowing.  I like the effect.

Don- Please don't pick the daisies bluebonnets.

Maria- I was surprised to find them.

Doreen- Yes, I saw the contest and wanted to participate.  It was very windy and I was trying to keep my hair away from the lens.  It was a lot of fun.

William- I hope you get many!

Good job Melody,    The pictures are lovely and the wildflowers are beginning to bloom more now in our area.  It took a while since we didn't get much rain this Spring.  Glad you joined the contest.

Hi Melody!  I was out walking around in the uptown area by Turtle Creek today and came upon a vacant lot sprinkled with wildflowers.  Got me thinking about how much I like them, how sad it is that we've now lost Lady Bird, and how we will all benefit from the fact that her spirit will always be with us through her lasting work and avocacy of the wildflowers in our state.  I also love your sentiment when you say "I am mighty proud of my state and pictures like this make me proud to be a Texan."  I'm right behind you on that!

Thank you for sharing such wonderful pictures of our Texas Wildflowers. When you drive through Txas and trave the hiways it makes you appreciate that we live in such a great state. Every spring we wait for the Wildflowers to bloom.
